Things to Do on Lake Wakatipu
Lake Wakatipu is the beating heart of Queenstown - 80 kilometres of glacier-carved, crystal-clear water framed by the Remarkables and Cecil Peak. It rises and falls roughly every 27 minutes in a natural rhythm Māori legend attributes to the heartbeat of the sleeping giant Matau, and it's the stage for just about every adventure this town is famous for.
Everything we do starts on this water. Blast down the Kawarau River on a jet boat, dive beneath the surface in a semi-submersible shark, drift high above it under a parasail, or carve your own line across the bays on a jet ski. Between rides, the lakefront itself is worth the trip - wander Queenstown Bay, watch the TSS Earnslaw steam past, and grab a spot on the foreshore as the sun drops behind Walter Peak. However you choose to experience it, Lake Wakatipu never gives the same day twice.

Where do I check in?
Thunder Jet and Paraflights check in at the Watersports Kiosk on Steamer Wharf, Beach Street. Hydro Attack and Jet Ski Tours check in at the Lapsley Butson Wharf kiosk by Earnslaw Park - both right on the central Queenstown lakefront. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your departure time for your safety briefing and gear fitting.
Do I need to book in advance?
In peak season (December to March), absolutely - popular departure times sell out days ahead. Outside peak you can often walk up to the kiosk, but booking online guarantees your spot and the best direct price.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
All of our activities are weather dependent. If conditions aren't suitable we'll contact you to reschedule, or refund you in full for cancellations made by us. We recommend calling for a weather check about an hour before your departure.
Will I get wet?
Depends on the ride! Paraflights is famously "fly high, stay dry" - you take off and land on the boat deck. On Thunder Jet expect spray, so bring a waterproof jacket. On Jet Ski Tours you will get splashed - life jackets and waterproof gear are provided. Hydro Attack keeps you sealed in a dry cockpit, even underwater.
Are there age, height or weight restrictions?
Each activity has its own restrictions - for example, Thunder Jet riders must be 2+ and over 13kg, Hydro Attack riders must be 6+ with a 192cm/110kg cockpit limit, jet ski drivers must be 18+ (passengers 8+), and children under 12 fly a paraflight with an adult. Full details are on each activity page and at booking.
Is there parking nearby?
Steamer Wharf is a two-minute walk from central Queenstown, with public parking on Beach Street and at the Man Street and Boundary Street car parks. In summer, walking or the local bus beats circling for a park.
